TAKUYA MARUYAMA

A craftsperson with a diverse background in disciplines, Takuya Maruyama applies this depth of experience to create simple and stylish tableware. Trained in metalwork, Maruyama has also worked in architectural level ceramics.

In recent years however, he has been based in the renowned Kasama ceramics studio of master potter Kōji Arata. From here, Maruyama applies his design imagination and capacity to create, to items for the table. In particular he has a wish to bring style and colour to refinements of classic forms. Having worked in different materials he regards ceramics as the perfect medium in which to a make a pot to serve Japanese tea, but while doing so retains a lightness of form, and a design-based approach. His mug shapes also have an uncommon lightness, and carefully developed combinations of glazes. Each item combines thoughtfulness and skill. Maruyama represents modern Kasama-ware in its original style, traditional roots, and focus on the user.
